Story

They called him "Mr. Goalie" because he was the crease equivalent to Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe. Glenn Hall was one of the greatest goalies of all time who for nearly 20 years did the dirty work in the nets-no mask, just guts. Although he played a few games with Detroit early in his career, Hall took over the Red Wings' goalie duties full-time in 1955. He played every minute for two full seasons before being traded to Chicago, where he stayed the next ten years. Hall continued to play every minute for another five years and more, finally having to miss a game on November 8, 1963, because of a bad back. He had played every minute of every game for 502 straight games, a record for goalies that will never be broken. In his rookie season, Hall recorded 12 shutouts to lead the league and had a 2.10 goals-against average. In fact, he never once had a GAA over 2.91 throughout his career, and this consistency ensured he played in the All-Star Game regularly. Between 1955 and '69, he played in 13 of 14 such games, but the highlight of his career came in 1960-61 when he led the Hawks to a Stanley Cup. Hall ended his career in St. Louis, playing four years with the expansion Blues from 1967 to 1971. Hardly old and washed up, Hall instead won the Conn Smythe Trophy for his heroics in the 1968 Stanley Cup finals against Montreal, and the following year he shared Vezina Trophy honours with teammate Jacques Plante. In all, Hall led the league in minutes played eight times and shutouts six times, finishing with 84 career shutouts, second on the all-time list to Terry Sawchuk. Hall was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1975.
