Story

Before devoting his career to the CFL, Bernie Faloney shone on the American college football scene. While at the University of Maryland, he led his team to the Sugar Bowl in 1952 and the Orange Bowl in 1953. He was also quarterback and co-captain during U of M's undefeated 1953 season which culminated in the national championship title. Faloney was the first draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers but chose instead to play in the CFL. He signed with the Edmonton Eskimos in 1954 and enjoyed his first Grey Cup victory later that season. After serving two years in the U.S. Air Force, Faloney returned to Canada and found a home with the Hamilton Tiger Cats in 1957. He led the Ticats to seven Grey Cup finals in eight years, claiming the Cup in 1957 and 1963. Faloney reluctantly left the Ticats after being traded to the Montreal Alouettes in 1965. He played two seasons with the Alouettes and one season with the B.C. Lions before retiring in 1967. Faloney completed 1,493 of 2,876 passes, had 151 touchdowns, and made just 201 interceptions. In total, he participated in nine Grey Cup finals, won the coveted Cup four times, and was the first quarterback to lead both an Eastern and a Western team to Grey Cup victories. For his superb performance on the field, Faloney received the Schenley Award as the league's most outstanding player in 1961 and the Jeff Russel Trophy as the Eastern Division's most outstanding player in 1965.
